
“In many Asian countries, marijuana is really looked down upon — almost like how federal law treats drugs like meth. It’s seen as being in the same category as other illegal substances,” Yamaki said. “If they see Hawaii as a kind of ‘drug haven,’ they will choose other destinations instead. And it wasn’t just the major tour companies saying this — it came up in a panel that included airlines and Japanese wholesalers, too. They all echoed the same concern.”
Legalizing recreational marijuana would drastically change the makeup of our tourism industry. Can we afford those changes? Would people come here to spend money in shops and restaurants or to just get high and cause trouble? Let's think about this carefully before it's too late.
